Dee Carstensen
Newcomer singer-songwriter D ee Carstensen has been receiving a lot of attention for her unique ability to blend the harp with her openly emotional songwriting and
warmly expressive lyrics. Sharing the bill with the likes of Dar Williams, Allison Krauss, Hall & Oats and Bobby McFerrin on "e-Town Radio," Dee was one of the most requested performers
during the 1997 festival season, which included mainstay performances at Rocky Mountain, Vancouver and Edmonton Folk Festivals.
My introduction to this beautiful and talented lady came from Robin Batteau (Buskin & Batteau) who called me about
five years ago from New York and suggested that Dee come down to Washington and play on a Music Americana Showcase. Robin's advice was good enough for me, so a
phone call was made to Dee and a date set for her to perform on a Showcase. She brought her 85-pound, 47-stringed concert harp, a
guitar player and a percussionist. What a show. Watching her play the harp and sing with a voice that touches the soul was a very special event.
We invited Dee back for a New Folk Concert and again she weaved her magic. The next step was to invite her to the 1996 World Folk Music Association 11th
Annual Benefit Concert, one of the first major folk events of the year and the major fundraiser for WFMA. The sold out auditorium of 1500 loved her. At the
time, I selected Dee as one of three emerging folk acts to break through and become a national act within a year. Dee Carstensen has three CDs available, is now
represented by a major booking agency and is playing all the major folk venues in the country. It was just a matter of time.
