Two of the best loved voices in contemporary folk music have released

whenever they share an evening's performance.

"Among the cognoscenti of the Chicago folk scene, Michael Smith,
author of such standards as "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River" was
the songwriters' songwriter and beautifully honest soprano Anne Hills
the diva of record."   Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

"Michael Smith stands out as one of the few undisputed geniuses among
singer-songwriters."  Sing Out Magazine

"Anne's writing is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done
today.  She is quite simple one of my absolute favorite songwriters."
Tom Paxton

Before They Were
the Mamas & Papas
The Magic Circle
Varese Sarabande VSD-5996

Before the Mamas & Papas, a series of groups rotated out of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s.  On college campuses and in coffeehouses, Cass Elliot, Denny Doherity, John and Michelle Phillips paid their musical dues in a variety of ensembles - The Big Three, the Mugwumps, the Journeymen, the New Journeymen, the Smoothies
 and the Halifax Three.

Their harmonic convergence resulted in one of the most popular American vocal groups of the late 1960s..  This compilation includes the Mamas & Papas hits "California Dreamin," and "Creeque Alley."  Songs by the Big Three, Mugwumps, Smoothies, Journeymen (old & new) and Halifax Three are also on this 16 track collection which contains rare and previously unreleased tracks.

Most songs appear on the CD for the first time.  Eight page booklet with detailed information on each group as well as rare photos.
